Our Values

Learn, Live, Lead

We are looking for young adults who are willing to learn, be honest about their need for God, and who yearn for Him. The reason nine70 exists is to develop spiritual leaders who will be influencers for the Kingdom.

The reality is, we all struggle, our hope is to develop Jesus centered influencers who are willing be open about their own strengths and weaknesses. A key character trait for a leader is a willingness to follow another; this supersedes all shortcomings.

In fact, potential leaders need to be whole-heartedly involved in both having someone personally leading and mentoring them, having peers they are working alongside, and personally guiding/leading others.  This is demonstrated by Paul with Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2

Let Love Live

Our hope is to develop leaders who spends time with the Lord and prays for other disciples and leaders. Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer.  The primary commandment that Jesus gave us as His disciples was to Love one another. (Matthew 22:37-40). Our objective is to point people to Jesus so they can see what it means to become a disciple of His and live a life of Love themselves. As leaders are developed through relationship with Jesus our hope is that they would reflect the character of love (1 Corinthians 13) and the integrity of an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7) as Scripture describes.

Learn Across Life Stages and Generations

nine70 is made up of Young Professionals, Young Married Couples and College Age people. Each life stage is unique in what life brings their way, but each is similar in that the only way to successfully navigate through the particular life stage is with Jesus. We believe the words of Scripture and the mission of Jesus to break down barriers and walls and develop unity in the faith. We believe that there is neither “Jew nor Greek, slave nor free” (Galatians 3:28) and that each member of the body of Christ needs one another (1 Corinthians 12:27). Our ministry would be very boring if we were all the same.

Teach by example and training

nine70’s approach to teaching is a foundation of knowledge gained by association followed by understanding from formal teaching.  That is, one living sermon is worth a hundred explanations.  For instance, Jesus only did what He saw the Father do or speak (John 14:8-9).

Make time for learning relationships

Jesus modeled that “each one teaches one.”  This is shown in John 1:38-39: “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”  “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.”

Doing life together while both following Jesus is called “Fellowship”;  similar to two people in a ship going somewhere together.  We need to have community with purpose. We can’t and don’t need to all live together, but can spend time with each other and share about our life and our soul walk.  This implies a commitment to “letting your guard down” and opening up about what’s inside.  It also means we will intentionally experience seasons together, both physical & spiritual, such as key moments in each other’s lives.  We are willing to be inconvenienced to be available when life happens, not when we plan a get together.    Catch things in the moment.  Eat together, work together, worship together, play together.  Doing life together is actually getting to know someone; where you have first hand exposure to attitudes and actions in the moment; nothing is hidden. Discipleship cannot be done on your terms – it must be on God’s terms. This is a key principle in our leadership development training.

Doing life together implies asking for authority to speak into each other’s lives about hypocrisy, attitudes, actions, etc.  This doesn’t mean the leader has to know more than the disciple.  Rather, the leader needs to put into practice what they do know.  For areas they don’t know that are critical to the life of their disciple, they can ask other leaders for guidance (we are a community, remember?). Willingness to follow Christ and others (both by the leader and the disciple) supersedes knowledge and understanding.  A bendable will is more important to God than a sharp mind.

Reach out

Outreach comes out of a life that is totally abandoned to God.  Everything Jesus said and did had relevance to their work of outreach by taking advantage of situations around him.   He reached people in all types of situations: rich/poor, friend/foe, healthy/sick, and the disciples watched and learned from each of these.   nine70 wants to inspire young adults to be “fully present” in situations of life, whether good or difficult.  nine70 wants to train them, mainly by “show and do” on-the-job training, to step into opportunities around them to influence others with the Light of the Gospel.   Their very presence is “good newsing”!

Reaching out is simple and expected of all Christians – their very presence is a light in their sphere of influence and is a proclamation.  For example, when a starfish has a leg cutoff, both the original starfish AND the cut off leg can both grow an entire starfish – ending up with two!  Each Christian, regardless of their role or gifts in the overall church body, has potential to reproduce another Christian.  In fact, if they stifle the presence of Christ within, they will never truly become spiritually mature. This is something that we need young adults to grasp in their lives.

nine70 wants to help young adults see how important all their relationships are, whether it’s the bottle of water given to the garbage man on a hot day,  or the surprise homemade dessert given to the annoying neighbor.  This shifts the focus from wishing there were more people “interested in the gospel” to believing God really has already provided the harvest (Matthew 9:38) and asking him to send us and others into it with boldness and humility to reap what He has sown.

Perpetual personal follow-up for new believers is key to their personal growth; without this we may do more harm than good.  We must view follow up as important as reaching out. This is key aspect of our large group environments.
